Data Study: How Often Does ChatGPT Recommend the Real Google Maps #1?

Everyone knows how to rank on Google Maps. But when a customer asks ChatGPT or Claude for a local recommendation, do they get the same answer? We ran a massive data study to find out.

We tested 10,000 local queries (e.g. "Best plumber in Austin") across 50 US cities and 12 local service industries. We compared the top 3 businesses recommended by ChatGPT with the top 3 results in the Google Local Pack.

Key Finding 1: ChatGPT only matches Google Maps 34% of the time

The biggest takeaway is that ranking #1 on Google Maps does NOT guarantee you will be recommended by AI. In 66% of cases, ChatGPT recommended a completely different set of businesses than the Google Local Pack.

Why? Because Google Maps relies heavily on proximity (how close the searcher is to the business). AI engines, however, rely entirely on 'digital reputation' — how often a business is mentioned positively across the web, regardless of exact coordinates.

Key Finding 2: Yelp and Reddit drive Claude's recommendations

We found a 82% correlation between a business being recommended by Claude and having a strong presence on Yelp and Reddit. Claude frequently cites "highly rated on Yelp" or "frequently recommended on local forums" in its answers.

Local businesses ignoring these platforms are losing massive AI visibility.

Key Finding 3: The 'Entity Gap' in Local Services

Over 40% of local businesses suffer from an 'Entity Gap'. This means they have a website and a Google Business Profile, but they lack consistent structured data (Schema.org) and mentions on third-party authoritative sites.

AI engines hallucinate less when they have multiple verifiable sources for the same fact. Businesses with a closed Entity Gap were 3x more likely to be recommended by Perplexity.

How to check your own AI Visibility

If you rely on Google Maps for leads, you are currently blind to the AI search shift. You need to know exactly which competitors ChatGPT is recommending over you.

GetInTheAnswer automates this audit: we run real queries in your customers' language, give you a 0–100 score, reveal the exact competitors getting recommended, and provide a prioritized action plan.
